New entrance

After a number of rock falls from the cliff above the river entrance, a new entrance has been engineered to allow cavers through the showcave gate and door when the cave is closed to the public. Keys are available from the normal collection points as detailed on the Key Holders page of this site.

Because of the serious danger of a curious member of the public becoming trapped in the cave, it is extremely important that the new gate is never left open and unattended. Please also double-check that the locks are secured each time you close the door.

The new entrance cannot be opened from the inside without keys, so parties are strongly recommended to ensure that they have a key with them if there is any possibility that the showcave will be shut before they return.

Now that the new entrance is fully operational, there is no access via the river entrance into the showcave. The old cavers' door is now permanently locked and the rope on the climb has been pulled up to keep it out of sight and away from floods. Cavers are asked to stay well away from the area around the resurgence.

Whilst it is still possible to exit via the old cavers' door into the river cave, this route should only be used in a genuine emergency when a party has been accidentally locked-in. If this happens, please make sure it's mentioned in the trip report so that we can put the knotted rope back where it can't be seen from below.
