Access Rules

Given Dan yr Ogof's unique status as a National Nature Reserve and a showcave open to the public, cavers are granted access subject to the following rules:

Novices are not permitted access to Dan yr Ogof

Parties will number up to 4 (excluding the warden) and enter only in the company of a warden. For “Health and Safety” reasons the Cave Company will not allow people to cave alone.

Parties are responsible for their conduct, safety and the provision of equipment necessary to safely complete the trip. The warden should also draw the attention of each member of the party to the conditions of access, particularly those relating to the use of any fixed aids in the cave, safety and the making of provision for emergency assistance to be called.

The warden shall be familiar with the route across the lakes, water levels, recent rainfall and the current weather forecast and should be satisfied that the party have considered the risks associate with the cave. The Warden must also be familiar with the location of the Entrapment Camp and its use in the case of a party becoming trapped by high water. This equipment must not be touched except in cases of genuine emergency.

Each caver wishing to enter the cave must give evidence of his holding an adequate acceptable Public Liability cover to the agent of the Showcave Management or of the Committee at the relevant access point for the trip.

Wardens should return to the secretary of the Cave Advisory Committee a record sheet for each trip within one week of its completion. This should show the route taken, the names of the participants, the club/s involved, details of accidents and near misses, and any other detail deemed necessary for maintaining the objectives of the Management Plan.

Marker tapes should not be crossed or moved under any circumstances without the express request of the Committee to do so.

Only electric lighting is to be used. Carbide must not be taken into the cave.

Special permission must be obtained before engaging in camping, dye tracing, research projects, major digging and use of explosives, when all necessary statutory licences must be shown. The Showcave Management has the final say on whether permission can be given for explosive use.

The gate is to be kept locked at all times.

No litter is to be left inside or outside the cave.

Parties should respect any directions or instructions issued by the Showcave staff, who have the right to refuse access.

Installations, apparatus and equipment should not be interfered with. Accidental damage should be reported immediately on return from the trip. The ventilation fans for the showcave operate automatically and must not be touched.

The warden and party should take precautions against drowning and hypothermia such as wearing a wetsuit in the Green Canal. In some parts of the cave, for example in the Windy Way, wind cooling is significant.

Parties may be asked to undertake appropriate tasks in the furtherance of the Management Plan.

Under no circumstances may payment be made for caving in Dan yr Ogof. All caving must be of a non-commercial nature.

In the event of an individual breaking any of the above rules, or otherwise violating the conditions of access, the Chairman, Vice-Chairman and Wardens' Secretary of the CAC shall consult and may opt to suspend that person’s right of access to the cave, pending consideration of the matter by the next full meeting of the CAC.

A meeting of the CAC shall have the right to suspend an individual’s right of access to the cave for a defined period. In the case of a Warden this could be up to the term remaining on that Warden's permit.
