As targets
for both sport and research, new discoveries are to be hoped for and exploration
to be encouraged. “Digging” parties are to be welcomed and long-term projects
are to be encouraged. (See "Digging Policy").
While striving
for exploration, however, the conservation requirements of the cave are to be
safeguarded.
The following
advice should be adhered to by all explorers:-
1 The
Committee should be advised of all discoveries as soon as possible. Requests for
confidentiality from the discoverers will be respected and their involvement
sought in all decisions to do with the discovery.
2 The
landowner/s should be advised, in confidence.
3 If a
second entrance is involved it must be gated to protect both the cave
environment and the insurance status of the Showcave.
4 The new
discovery should be surveyed as soon as possible and features of special merit
protected, perhaps by taping or by choosing of the least damaging routes of
passage.
5 Appropriate scientific expertise should be involved as soon as possible and
sporting cavers encouraged either by short term secrecy or by request to avoid
visiting the area until the researchers have had time to assess the situation.
6 The
rules applying to the rest of the cave should be followed.
7 All
discoveries and research should be fully documented and copies of these
documents lodged with the Committee whether they are to be held in confidence or to
be immediately available to other cavers.
